Soaring Ocean Freight & Tense Trade Landscape Urge Overseas Buyers to Confirm Orders & Arrange Shipments ASAP

Ocean freight rates have surged across all major shipping routes recently, compounded by tightening U.S. tariff policies against China and geopolitical disruptions in the Red Sea that rattle global supply chains. Double cost pressures weigh heavily on foreign trade manufacturers.

Industry insiders remind overseas buyers that prolonged wait-and-see will only push up overall procurement costs. It is advised to finalize orders and lock shipping space at the earliest to avoid dual risks of further price hikes and container shortages. According to the latest data from the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, freight rates for 40HQ containers bound for the U.S. West Coast have jumped by over 87% year-to-date, while rates for U.S. East Coast routes have risen more than 70%. Major carriers have announced another round of freight hikes and peak season surcharges effective July. The sharp rate surge stems from multiple rigid factors. Persistent risks in the Red Sea force most vessels to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope, extending sailing time and fuel consumption and cutting global effective shipping capacity by around 15%. Meanwhile, overseas importers ramp up pre-season stocking for Western holiday consumption peaks, creating tight container supply, frequent roll-overs and premium surcharges for available space.

Elevated global oil prices also push carriers to levy higher bunker adjustment factors, further inflating logistics expenses. On top of rocketing shipping costs, U.S. import tariffs on Chinese goods remain steep, with high combined tax rates covering hardware, machinery, metal products and other mainstream export categories. Delayed orders and split shipments adopted by some buyers previously prove uneconomical now, as postponed deliveries incur both higher freight and extra capital occupation costs. Domestic manufacturers maintain current product quotations for clients confirming orders shortly and will reserve priority container space. Orders delayed until mid-to-late July will fail to lock current rates, face severe container shortages and extended transit times exceeding 40 days, risking missed retail sales windows overseas. Logistics analysts forecast little room for freight rate declines in the short term, with peak cargo volumes keeping rates elevated through September. We urge overseas partners to accelerate order confirmation and finalize shipment schedules.

Our team will prioritize production and pre-book containers to offset cost pressures from rising ocean freight and tariffs, stabilize bilateral supply chains and cut overall import expenditures.
